Every time you go for a run, smash out a weights session or join a circuit class you are investing in your health. You are investing in a stronger, fitter and healthier you, from the inside out. I’m not saying that you can bulletproof your life, but you can definitely increase your resilience.
Life, illness, injury and death are going to happen to all of us whether we like it or not. However, you will be much better equipped to deal with life’s challenges if you are the best version of you. Exercise is more commonly associated with rippling abs, tight butts and athletes. But we should think of exercise as preventative health.
Countless studies have shown that exercise can decrease the likelihood and impact of chronic illnesses. Use something as simple as walking as an example: regular brisk walks have been associated with improved cardiovascular function (a healthy heart), quicker recovery from sports injuries, fat loss and increased happiness for people struggling with depression.
For me the choice is easy. I’d rather invest the time, energy, sweat, muscle soreness and early mornings right now, than pay for it later physically and emotionally. I think you would also agree that a gym membership and personal training are both a heck of a lot cheaper (and more fun for that matter!) than heart surgery or a knee replacement.
Now I’m not saying that investing in your health is easy, but it is without a doubt worth it. There are going to be times where you rationalise skipping a workout and that’s fine. We don’t have to be perfect all the time. Just remember that you are only selling yourself short by not exercising.
Every time you workout you are giving your body what it craves and deserves. And if you do it right, your body will reward you with a good 80-100 years on this planet. Exercise has the ability to change your life for the better, one workout at a time. So get out there and start investing in something that really matters!
